How to Make Homemade Elderberry Syrup

Benefits of elderberry: The berries and flowers of elderberry are full of antioxidants and vitamins that are helpful to our immune system. These antioxidants make elderberry a great choice to lower inflammation and decrease stress on our bodies. According to this scientific article, it was found that those who were given oral elderberry recovered 4 days faster and used significantly less medication than those who were not administered oral elderberry. Here’s how you can DIY delicious elderberry syrup at home!

You’ll need:
Elderberries – 4 cups (can usually find frozen at whole foods or other health food store)
Aronia berries (optional)
3-4 cinnamon sticks
6 whole cloves
2 small pieces of ginger root
Raw, organic honey (3.5 cups)- local is best
1 cup raw/organic apple cider vinegar (I use Bragg’s)

Instructions:
Place elderberries, aronia berries, cinnamon, cloves and ginger in a pan. Cover with water. bring to a boil. Reduce heat and let simmer for 10 minutes. Cover and let set for 24-36 hours. Strain through cheese cloth or a mesh strainer. Add your apple cider vinegar and honey. You may need to heat it to get honey to mix in. Keeps well in a glass jar.

Makes 3-4 quarts

How much should I use at a time:
Adults can take 1 Tablespoon several times a day.
